14 Normandie

Our group did a weekend trip to the north–Normandie, Bretagne– and right after, my computer thought that it would be fun to not function for a while. I completely get that impulse (I had class today? oops), but it was still annoying. After some long, late-night discussions, (and bringing in a counselor), my computer and I worked through our issues, and she is back to functioning. Anyways, due to this, I am way behind on posts–so here is my last month.

First: Normandy/Brittany! super fun weekend. We bussed up from Tours, and started by visiting the Caen memorial for D-day (le jour J in french, not sure why…) IMG_2126.jpgIMG_2125.jpg
That night we stayed in Arromanches, a charming little seaside town with crazy cliffs that makes you forget that thousands of Brits stormed the beaches seventy-odd years ago. You can still see remnants of the artificial port that the allies built to disembark. Apparently Normandy is the home of some famous ciders, so Danny and I made sure to get autographsIMG_2127.jpgIMG_2128.jpgCam, Livesey and I exploring the cliffs

After checking out the Arromanches museum (meh), we went to (one each of the many of each) American and German cemeteries. Both were designed very well, and merit a visit if you’re in Normandy.

Then we went to see the Bayeux Tapestry. its an embroidery (not tapestry) from the 13th century telling the story of how William the Conqueror… well, conquered. He was the Duc de Normandie and made himself King of England. What’s really crazy is, his 22nd great-grandaughter is the current Queen Elizabeth. 800 years is not half bad for a family to rule. Anyhoo, the ‘tapestry’ is basically a big piece of propaganda. big. Like, you walk in the room, and it extends way ahead of you. Then you get the end, and it curves around alllllllllllll the way back. 230 feet. Too much fun.

Then…
Mont Saint-Michel !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Coolest place of all time. We stayed at this awesome hotel, and the best part is that we stayed the night—all day long the island turns into an anthill of tourists and employees, but at night it is deserted. So we got to walk around the streets and ramparts in absolute silence. Picture Minas Tirith from Lord of the Rings meets Diagon Alley from Harry Potter, throw in a bunch of graveyards and a majestic monastery looming above you, and you’ll start to get the feel. It was really cool. IMG_2131.jpgIMG_2133.jpgIMG_2134.jpg
The next day we toured the monastery and grabbed lunch. I got some icecream with Livesey and Cam. I was eating it on the walls. A bit drops all the way down to the ground, and seagulls start going crazy. They start doing little fly-bys, trying to intimidate me and all, but I’m thinking, “I can take these birds”. Suddenly, one lands on my arm, takes a huge bite out of my icecream, and flies away. Then all the french people in the restaurant laughed at (with? no, at.) me. It was… surreal.

The last day, we headed into Brittany and checked out a town called St. Malo, with a cool wall. It was cool. There was a wall. 12122680_10205027888643188_8221857801433041705_n.jpg12167979_690938191006986_2119458892_n.jpg
I climbed around on rocks. Good times.
